Homemade Sprinkles
During my first job working in the kitchen, my responsibility was to produce sprinkles. What began as a mundane task gradually evolved into the most anticipated part of my mornings. This delightful recipe only calls for a handful of ingredients, and it provides plenty of room for creative exploration!
How long do homemade sprinkles last?
These sprinkles should last about a year in an airtight container, stored in a cool dry place. I also love to keep them in my freezer to grab as needed!
Sprinkles Recipe:
Equipment Needed:
Parchment or Wax paper
Ziploc bag or piping bag
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Drying Time: Overnight
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups of powdered sugar
3 Tbs of lukewarm water
1 Tbs of light corn syrup
Food Coloring
Edible glitter and flavor extracts optional
Instructions:
Sift the powdered sugar into a bowl and then combine all other ingredients. Whisk until it is thick enough to pipe through your bag. Add more powdered sugar or water as needed. It should form a loose paste.
If you are wanting to create multiple colors, divide your paste into separate smaller bowls and add the food coloring as desired.
Divide into piping bags with #3 or #4 plain piping tips, or snip off the end of your Ziploc bag!
Pipe your colors onto parchment or wax paper in straight lines and put it aside to dry out overnight.
Once dry, you can break or cut your sprinkle pieces and store them in an airtight container until ready to use!
Notes:
If you wanted to substitute food coloring for natural colors, here are some great options:
Red/Pink: Beet juice or strawberry powder
Blue: Blue pea flower powder
Green: Matcha powder
Yellow: Turmeric
Here are some optional flavor extracts you can add (1tsp):
Vanilla extract
Coconut extract
Lemon extract
Orange extract
You can be creative with your sprinkles by piping smaller shapes or dots! Have fun with this!
